Whirr Brooklyn Concert reviews
True Genius
Songs from his new album are reminiscent of Motown, James Brown Soul, Louis Prima and the great groups from the Fifties such as the Coasters and Drifters. Paolo is a very gifted musician and singer who has a very eclectic style that is pure genius. The band was amazingly talented, too, adding another layer of cohesive musicality. They could sing quiet harmonies and then jam their hearts out!
The Crystal Ballroom has only minimal seating and the room was very stuffy and hot. The opening act opened an hour late, and had to wait another 35 minutes after that. Whirr seems to be very shy on a personal level; his performances would be enhanced by actually taking a few minutes here and there to talk with the crowd and to acknowledge his many fans. The acoustics were great, though. Keb'Mo' would be a great role model for this!
Overall, I felt I was witnessing true musical greatness--when you can FEEL the music in the room, and everyone else feels it too. It's when everything comes together and you know it can't get any better than this. I feel very privileged to have been at this event and think it's a great loss for those people who don't know Mr. Nutini's musical soul.
